Budapest Easter Market

>> Thursday, 4 June 2009

It was Easter week when we visited Budapest. Having been to a few Easter markets in Vienna days earlier, I was eager to check out Budapest's. I really enjoyed the markets in Vienna - seeing the local handicrafts and indulging in Viennese food and wines. :)

Traditional beer steins or mugs. Most souvenir shops and stalls sell these beautiful steins. I've seen many of these in Prague as well. If I'm not mistaken, beer steins have its origin in Germany. Why include the lid, hinge and thumblift for a mug? During 15th century, Central Europe was repeatedly overwhelmed by summer swarms of insect and thus the practice of covering food and drinks were common.

Traditional Hungarian dolls.

Traditional costumes. It's actually still quite common to see Hungarian wearing their traditional costumes in the city. We stumbled upon some during our trip.

Perfumes.

Trdelnik is a sweet pastry comes with flavours like cinnamon or walnut and is originated from Central Europe. We tried Trdelnik in Prague last year and didn't eat it this round. We were saving our appetite for other delicacies. Hehe. ;p In fact, I think Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are similar in history, culture, arts and architecture in many ways.

Food. Food. Food. Various types of Hungarian food! Hehe! As I passed by each Hungarian food stalls, I was getting hungrier than ever. ;p

How could beers be missed in festive celebrations?!

I don't remember the Hungarian names of the food. We ordered a fried potato dish, sausages and BBQ grilled chicken! Yummy! :)
